Sanctioned Russian Oil Tanker heads to Cuba as Trump downplays concerns
A Russian oil tanker under international sanctions is expected to arrive in Cuba, carrying a significant shipment of crude oil as the island faces a deepening energy crisis. The vessel is reportedly transporting hundreds of thousands of barrels and is heading toward a major Cuban port.
Cuba, home to nearly 10 million people, has not received oil shipments since early January, when its last delivery from Mexico was halted. The suspension followed pressure from the United States, leaving the country struggling with fuel shortages and power disruptions.
Despite the geopolitical implications, former U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about the delivery. Speaking to reporters, he stated that he sees “no problem” with any country, including Russia, supplying oil to Cuba, adding that such shipments would not significantly change the situation on the island.
Energy analysts note that once the tanker enters Cuban territorial waters, it becomes increasingly difficult for external actors to intervene. The situation highlights ongoing tensions surrounding sanctions, energy security, and regional political dynamics.
