Russia and Vietnam sign agreement to build nuclear power plant
Russia and Vietnam have signed an intergovernmental agreement to cooperate on the construction of the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant in Vietnam, according to Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom.
The project includes two Russian-designed reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts (MW), aiming to increase Vietnam’s power generation amid rising demand from its industrial sector and growing middle class. Frequent extreme weather, including droughts and typhoons, has also strained the country’s electricity supply.
The agreement formalizes cooperation between the two countries and outlines the main areas of collaboration for the construction process. No cost details were disclosed.
The Ninh Thuan 1 project was originally launched in the early 2010s but was suspended in 2016 due to budget and safety concerns. Vietnam, which maintains close ties with Russia, is now seeking to expand its energy capacity as part of its long-term strategy to secure reliable electricity.
