In a year marked by a surge in traffic violations, Morocco recorded 374,446 official reports of road infractions in 2023, as disclosed by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). This figure represents a marginal increase of approximately 1% compared to the 372,086 reports documented in the previous year, as highlighted in a recent press release detailing the DGSN's 2023 accomplishments.

While the number of fines issued during the same period experienced a modest decline of 8.5%, decreasing from 1,728,209 in 2022 to 1,711,208 in 2023, the impact of these violations continued to have a tangible effect on road safety. Notably, urban areas recorded a significant surge of 7% in physical traffic accidents, with the figure escalating from 80,091 incidents in 2022 to 85,475 in 2023, as emphasized by the DGSN. Consequently, this spike in accidents resulted in a higher toll of casualties, with 993 fatalities reported in 2023 compared to 834 in the preceding year, in addition to 4,413 serious injuries and 111,478 minor injuries.

Highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts, the DGSN underscored its ongoing institutional partnership with the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA). This productive alliance facilitated the implementation of strategic initiatives aimed at preventing accidents and raising public awareness. Notably, the partnership enabled the provision of cutting-edge logistical and roadside control equipment to mobile traffic brigades. In the current year alone, a fleet of 120 motorcycles with large and medium cylinders was delivered, enhancing the operational capabilities of law enforcement officials. Furthermore, the DGSN spearheaded the development and widespread adoption of an updated version of the Roadside Control Guide. This comprehensive resource ensures systematic training and the accurate enforcement of road safety regulations by police officers and civil servants alike.

In an effort to improve road user behavior, authorities engaged in comprehensive discussions on a range of best practices when interacting with citizens on the public highway. Whether pedestrians, motorists, or their escorts, a fresh approach to training aimed to instill responsible conduct and promote harmonious coexistence among all road users.

Amidst the evolving landscape of road safety, Morocco remains committed to addressing traffic violations through robust enforcement measures, preventive programs, and public education initiatives. The challenges may be significant, but the nation's unwavering dedication to ensuring road safety remains steadfast.
