Rabat–Salé–Kénitra intensifies crackdown on illegal water and electricity connections
The regional multiservice company operating in Morocco’s Rabat–Salé–Kénitra area has launched an intensified campaign to identify and eliminate illegal connections to water, electricity, and sanitation networks across several parts of the region.
The operations, carried out in coordination with local authorities, law enforcement services, and technical partners, target mainly peri-urban areas and rural communes where unauthorized connections have been reported or suspected.
According to preliminary findings, several cases of illegal hookups have been detected in different localities within the provinces of Sidi Slimane and Sidi Kacem. Authorities have taken the necessary measures in accordance with existing legal procedures.
Investigations have also uncovered instances of unauthorized electricity supply to agricultural facilities and commercial projects operating outside regulatory frameworks. In some cases, technical teams have dismantled equipment used for these illegal connections.
Officials stated that the campaign forms part of a broader and ongoing strategy aimed at protecting public infrastructure and ensuring the integrity of essential utility networks. The initiative is expected to be extended progressively to all areas under the company’s jurisdiction.
The utility provider emphasized that such illegal practices cause significant damage to infrastructure and generate substantial financial losses for both the company and the public sector. They also require considerable human and technical resources for monitoring, inspection, and legal processing.
Authorities stressed that illegal connections undermine fairness among users, particularly those who regularly pay their utility bills, and warned that offenders are subject to legal penalties under Moroccan law. These include provisions related to electricity theft, damage to public infrastructure, and water management regulations.
Similar enforcement operations have also been reported in other Moroccan regions, including Tanger–Tétouan–Al Hoceïma, as part of a nationwide effort to combat fraud and protect public utility systems, particularly in rural and semi-urban zones.
