Rabat Crowned UNESCO World Book Capital 2026: A Literary Triumph for Morocco

Rabat, Morocco's capital, has been officially designated as the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2026, marking a significant milestone in the city's cultural landscape. This prestigious title, announced by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, recognizes Rabat's commitment to promoting literature, empowering through reading, and combating illiteracy.

The year-long celebration will commence on April 23, 2026, coinciding with World Book and Copyright Day. As a UNESCO World Book Capital, Rabat pledges to champion books and reading across all age groups and demographics, both locally and internationally.

Rabat's selection stems from its persistent efforts in literary promotion and education. The city's thriving book industry, boasting 54 publishing houses and the third-largest international book fair in Africa, plays a pivotal role in its creative economy. This robust literary ecosystem significantly contributes to the democratization of knowledge and enhances educational opportunities.

Director-General Azoulay praised Rabat's selection, stating, "Rabat serves as a major cultural hub where books facilitate the sharing of diverse knowledge and arts. Additionally, the flourishing local book industry plays an essential role in enhancing education."

As part of its tenure as World Book Capital, Rabat has outlined ambitious plans to boost access to books and bolster the local publishing sector. The city aims to implement groundbreaking initiatives focused on increasing literacy access for all residents, with the goal of fostering sustainable economic growth and promoting social advancement.

Rabat's designation is particularly noteworthy as it becomes the 26th city to receive this honor since the program's inception in 2001. It joins the ranks of other cultural powerhouses such as Madrid, Alexandria, New Delhi, and Rio de Janeiro.

The city's recent International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL) saw a remarkable turnout, with visitor numbers exceeding 316,000, underscoring the public's enthusiasm for literary events and reinforcing Rabat's position as a burgeoning center for book culture.

This recognition not only celebrates Rabat's current achievements but also sets the stage for a year of literary exploration, cultural exchange, and educational advancement. As the World Book Capital for 2026, Rabat is poised to showcase Morocco's rich literary heritage and its commitment to fostering a knowledge-based society on the global stage.
