Pro-Iran group threatens imminent attacks on US bases in Iraq
A powerful pro-Iran armed faction in Iraq has warned that it is preparing to launch imminent attacks against United States military bases in the country, escalating tensions in an already fragile regional security environment.
The group, known as Kataeb Hezbollah, issued a statement declaring that it would soon begin targeting American installations in response to recent airstrikes. According to the group, the strikes were directed at an Iraqi military facility that hosts its fighters.
Earlier on Saturday, air raids hit the base of Jurf al-Sakher — also referred to as Jurf al-Nasr — located south of Baghdad. Two fighters were reportedly killed in the attack. The facility has long been associated with Iran-aligned armed factions operating within Iraq.
The incident highlights renewed friction between Washington and Iran-backed groups active in Iraq. The United States maintains a limited military presence in Iraq as part of a broader security partnership aimed at supporting local forces and countering extremist threats. However, that presence has frequently drawn criticism from factions aligned with Tehran.
Iraq remains a key arena in the broader rivalry between Washington and Tehran. Over the past years, cycles of strikes and retaliatory threats have periodically raised concerns about wider instability across the region. Iraqi authorities have often called for restraint, emphasizing the need to prevent the country from becoming a battleground for external disputes.
Security analysts note that any escalation could further complicate Iraq’s internal political and security landscape, as the government seeks to balance international partnerships with domestic pressures from influential armed groups.
