Representatives from the United States, Morocco, and ten other partner nations are gathering in Agadir this week to initiate the planning phase for African Lion 2024, the premier interoperability exercise in Africa.

In its 20th year, the annual drills are scheduled to unfold across Morocco from May 20 to 31, engaging thousands of troops in training focused on operational capabilities, civil-military cooperation, and response strategies for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incidents.

A distinctive feature of this year's exercise is its inclusion of the disputed territory of Sahara, a clear manifestation of unwavering U.S. support for Moroccan sovereignty in the region. Troops will undergo training in the city of Mehbes, reaffirming the enduring American stance on the matter.

Over the past two decades, African Lion has played a pivotal role in fortifying military ties between the U.S. and Morocco, while also fostering stronger multilateral partnerships. As generals and planners finalize their arrangements in Agadir this week, they are laying the groundwork for another successful demonstration of collective security efforts across the African continent.
