North Korea has launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its eastern coast, according to reports from South Korea's military.

The missiles were detected on Tuesday at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time (00:30 GMT), with their origin traced to North Korea’s Jagang Province. They reportedly traveled up to 250 kilometers (155 miles) before landing in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirmed enhanced monitoring of North Korea's activities and noted coordination with both the United States and Japan. The JCS emphasized a strong readiness posture and condemned the missile launches as a provocation that jeopardizes regional peace and stability. It also warned North Korea against miscalculating the situation and vowed a decisive response to further provocations.

South Korea’s Acting President reiterated the nation's firm stance, denouncing the missile tests as violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions. This recent launch marks the second missile test by North Korea this year, following the test of a new hypersonic missile on January 6.

North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, has pledged to expand the country's arsenal of nuclear-capable weapons, citing the need to counter perceived threats from rival nations. During a recent political meeting, Kim announced plans to implement stronger anti-US policies and criticized efforts by Washington to bolster security ties with Seoul and Tokyo.

Meanwhile, Japan's government confirmed awareness of the missile launches and reported close coordination with its allies to ensure regional security.
