Nigerian court orders two TikTok stars to marry after “Indecent” video

In Kano, the largest city in northern Nigeria, an Islamic court has ordered the marriage of two TikTok personalities after they shared a video deemed “indecent” under local religious and social norms.

On Monday, the judge instructed the Hisbah, the Islamic moral police of Kano, to arrange the wedding within 60 days. The ruling came after the couple, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda — the latter living with dwarfism — appeared in several videos kissing and embracing. Such public displays of affection are considered inappropriate in Kano’s conservative Muslim society.

“The court ordered Hisbah to marry the man and woman since they seem to be so deeply in love that they show their romance on TikTok,” said Baba-Jibo Ibrahim, a judiciary spokesperson in Kano. “The marriage must be celebrated within two months,” he added.

Wushirya, who has previously faced legal issues for posting “indecent” content online, was arrested and remains in detention. Hisbah officials confirmed they have begun preparations for the wedding. “Even though we have 60 days, we are determined to do it as soon as possible,” said Hisbah’s director, Abba Sufi, adding that both parties and Wushirya’s parents have given their consent.

Kano is one of 12 Nigerian states where Sharia law operates alongside the national legal system. Hisbah, created in 2001, enforces Islamic codes of conduct and regularly monitors local media, including the vibrant Hausa-language film industry known as Kannywood, and more recently, social media.

The case has sparked debate across Nigeria about personal freedom, religious authority, and the growing reach of moral policing in the digital age.
