MPs Rally for Bolstering Credible Press and Combating Fake News
In response to the pervasive spread of disinformation across the digital landscape, members of parliament are rallying for a robust strategy to combat "fake news" and fortify the pivotal role of credible media.
During an impassioned session on Wednesday, deputies thoroughly examined recommendations on tackling fake news put forth by the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council (CESE). Emphasizing freedom of information as a constitutional right, they underscored the imperative of bolstering media literacy to cultivate critical thinking skills among the public.
Expressing profound concern over the proliferation of biased online platforms intentionally disseminating disinformation, capable of inciting hatred and influencing political decisions, MPs commended Morocco's institutions for actively fact-checking rumors. However, they cautioned against the unbridled dissemination of substandard, fake content that could detrimentally impact society.
Commending fact-checking initiatives undertaken by media outlets such, the deputies proposed concrete actions. These encompass the establishment of a government-led portal to authenticate official information and the creation of an observatory exclusively dedicated to combating fake news.
In addition to these proposals, parliamentarians advocated for the integration of critical thinking into school curricula, aiming to provide learners with the necessary tools to process and verify information independently. They emphasized the shared responsibility of the government, credible media, and civil society in safeguarding the public's right to accurate information.
