Morocco's Unyielding Commitment to Its Territorial Integrity in the Sahara
In a significant address, His Majesty King Mohammed VI articulated Morocco's steadfast resolve to affirm the undeniable reality of its territorial integrity concerning the Sahara region. The King emphasized that this commitment is rooted in legal legitimacy and a responsible engagement with historical truths. He underscored the strong connection between the Sahrawi people and their Moroccan identity, which is nurtured by centuries-old ties of allegiance to the Moroccan monarchy.
During his speech commemorating the 49th anniversary of the Glorious Green March, King Mohammed VI highlighted the unwavering attachment of Sahrawis to their Moroccan heritage and national symbols. He pointed out that this bond is not merely a matter of sentiment but is reinforced by the historical Beia, which has long linked the Sahrawi population to Moroccan kings. The King noted that this relationship is essential in reinforcing Morocco's claims over the Sahara.
Furthermore, His Majesty spoke of the ongoing development and stability within the Moroccan Sahara, noting an increase in international recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the region. He expressed optimism regarding growing support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, which seeks to provide a realistic and pragmatic solution to the long-standing territorial dispute.
In stark contrast, King Mohammed VI lamented the existence of alternative narratives that are disconnected from reality. He criticized those who cling to outdated myths and demand referendums, an option he stated has been rendered impractical by the United Nations due to its inapplicability. The King pointed out that some factions refuse to acknowledge the plight of populations held in camps in Tindouf, where individuals are reportedly subjected to dire conditions and deprivation of basic rights.
Addressing these dissenting voices, he reiterated Morocco's openness to initiatives that would facilitate access for Sahel states to the Atlantic Ocean, reflecting a spirit of collaboration and mutual benefit for regional countries. This initiative aims not only to enhance regional connectivity but also to foster economic growth across North Africa.
Moreover, His Majesty emphasized that some parties exploit the Sahara issue as a smokescreen for their internal challenges while others manipulate legal aspects for narrow political gains. He firmly stated that Morocco's legal commitments will never compromise its national unity or territorial integrity.
The King called upon the United Nations to recognize the stark differences between two paradigms: one represented by Morocco’s legitimate claims in the Sahara and another based on outdated ideologies detached from current realities. He urged international bodies to take decisive action in addressing this longstanding issue.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made during the Green March, King Mohammed VI urged renewed vigilance and mobilization to strengthen Morocco’s achievements regarding its sovereignty over the Sahara. He stressed that development benefits must extend to all citizens across Morocco, ensuring that progress reaches every corner from the Rif Mountains to the Sahara.
This address not only reaffirms Morocco's commitment to its territorial claims but also highlights a broader vision for regional cooperation and development, positioning Morocco as a proactive player on both national and international stages.
