Morocco unveils revamped Grand Stadium of Marrakech for AFCON 2025

The Grand Stadium of Marrakech has reopened following extensive renovations, poised to host key matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Known for hosting the FIFA Club World Cup in 2013 and 2014, the stadium now meets international standards, standing as a symbol of Morocco's ambition to become a global sports hub.

A modernized sporting landmark

Renovations began in early 2024, concluding in June 2025. Abdelkerim Bouilli, development director of the National Agency for Public Facilities (ANEP), stated that modifications were made to comply with Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. Key upgrades include revamped locker rooms, media zones, and a relaid pitch.

Fans will enjoy improved amenities, such as wider seating, a new 180-seat panoramic restaurant, and enhanced crowd flow with 77 turnstiles, up from 36, enabling quicker access to the stands.

A $40 million investment in Morocco’s football future

The first renovation phase, costing MAD 400 million ($40 million), highlights Morocco’s commitment to world-class infrastructure. Morad Karaoui, regional director of Sonarges, described the stadium as an “architectural jewel,” now boasting seven VIP lounges, 15 skyboxes, and four FIFA-certified training pitches.

Morocco’s broader development plan includes a $5 billion investment in infrastructure, with upgrades to five stadiums and construction of a 115,000-seat venue near Casablanca. This initiative aims to boost the economy and increase tourist arrivals to 26 million by 2030.

Preparations for FIFA World Cup 2030

A second renovation phase is planned post-AFCON 2025, transforming the stadium into an octagonal structure, roofing it entirely, and expanding capacity to 46,000 seats by 2028. These upgrades are part of Morocco’s preparations as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Before welcoming global audiences, the stadium will host a friendly match this Saturday, with Kawkab Marrakech, newly promoted to Botola Pro D1, facing Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel.

Morocco’s investments extend beyond stadiums, encompassing road networks, transportation systems, and airport upgrades to ensure seamless travel for fans and teams. The Grand Stadium of Marrakech encapsulates Morocco's vision of becoming a premier destination for international sports.
