Morocco has reinforced its status as a frontrunner in the preservation of artistic traditions on the global stage with the recent inclusion of Malhun poetic songs in UNESCO’s esteemed Intangible Cultural Heritage list. With a total of 13 cultural elements now inscribed on the prestigious register, Morocco surpasses all other African nations. This significant announcement emerged during the recent meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee in Gaborone, Botswana, where nominations from around the world were reviewed.

Malhun, an ancient form of musical poetry originating from the Tafilalet region in southeastern Morocco, traces its roots back to Sufi practitioners in local shrines. Over centuries, it has permeated the artisan guilds of imperial cities such as Fez and Marrakech. This art form is characterized by sung improvised verses complemented by drumming and energetic dance.

Morocco's achievement is noteworthy, as it places the country ahead of its African counterparts, with Mali closely following with eight traditions listed by UNESCO to date. Similarly, neighboring Algeria has gained recognition for eight cultural practices. Other African nations included on the register are Malawi (6 elements), Zambia, Nigeria, and Egypt (5 each), Ethiopia (4), and Côte d'Ivoire and Mauritania (3 each).

This recent addition solidifies Morocco's reputation as a torchbearer for African cultural heritage globally. From the enchanting rhythms of Gnawa music to the captivating Fantasia horse pageantry, Morocco's vibrant living traditions consistently evoke pride across the Maghreb and beyond.
