Morocco Takes the Lead in Renewable Energy and Regional Collaboration
Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch proudly asserts Morocco's pioneering role in renewable energy and strategic partnerships. Addressing the Italy-Africa Summit on Monday, Akhannouch underscored Morocco's prowess in solar and wind power. The North African nation embarked on its renewable energy strategy in 2009, resulting in the inauguration of Africa's largest solar plant in Ouarzazate. Presently, over 40% of Morocco's energy is sourced from renewables, with a target to reach 52% by 2030.
Akhannouch also highlighted Morocco's ambitions in green hydrogen, citing advantageous geography and a robust human capital base. "Morocco is strategically positioned on the global hydrogen map," he emphasized.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister stressed the significance of regional collaboration through the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline. This initiative aims to enhance energy security in West Africa and Europe by fostering integration. It also supports electrification, industrialization, and agricultural development, contributing to an uplift in living standards.
Referring to the pipeline as "a model of regional integration based on a shared vision," the Prime Minister argued that dependable partnerships are crucial, particularly in the face of global crises.
Akhannouch proposed that Italy is well-placed to contribute to Africa's growth by fostering cooperation in infrastructure, training, energy, security, health, education, and immigration. With its bold strides in renewables and strategic alliances, Morocco sets an inspiring example for others to follow.
