Morocco Takes Center Stage at COP28 with Its Proactive Approach to Weather and Climate Risks
DUBAI - Morocco's prowess in preemptively addressing meteorological and climate risks took the spotlight during the COP28 climate conference on Saturday.
Addressing a side-event in Dubai, Nizar Baraka, Morocco's Minister of Equipment and Water, underscored the pivotal role of national weather services in proactive risk management. He highlighted Morocco's widely embraced early warning system, which efficiently mobilizes resources and prepares communities for hazardous weather events.
"By forecasting risks in advance, we can ensure the efficient mobilization of resources, optimal preparedness, and effective disaster management," Baraka emphasized.
The minister attributed Morocco's success in reducing loss of life and property damage to the efforts of the General Directorate of Meteorology. He commended the directorate's forecasts for enhancing Morocco's preparedness and resilience against the impact of natural disasters.
Baraka also emphasized that early alerts provide individuals, communities, and governments with valuable time to take protective measures before, during, and after catastrophes.
The side-event, moderated by Abdelfattah Sahibi, the Director-General of National Meteorology, convened distinguished representatives from Morocco, Africa, and international organizations such as the World Meteorological Organization.
