Morocco sets new record for fresh onion exports after lifting ban
Morocco’s fresh onion exports reached unprecedented levels in the 2024/25 season, following the removal of restrictions that had significantly curtailed trade the previous year. Between June 2024 and May 2025, the country exported 64,900 metric tons of fresh onions valued at $238 million, nearly five times the volume of the previous season and 3% higher than the 2022/23 record.
A decade of steady growth
Morocco’s onion export journey reflects years of gradual progress. From barely 10,000 tons in the early 2010s, exports doubled to over 20,000 tons in 2013/14 and surpassed 40,000 tons by 2018/19. By 2022/23, exports exceeded 60,000 tons, marking a milestone for Moroccan agriculture. However, this upward trend was interrupted in February 2023 when Morocco Foodex imposed restrictions on onion exports to West African markets, causing volumes to plummet to just 13,500 tons for the 2023/24 season.
The lifting of these restrictions in mid-2024 allowed the sector to recover quickly, with exports rebounding to record levels in just one season. September 2024 alone saw 14,200 tons exported—more than the total volume of the previous season.
Key markets and new opportunities
West Africa remains the cornerstone of Morocco’s onion trade, led by Mauritania, which doubled its imports compared to 2022/23. Ivory Coast also increased its share, while shipments to Mali and Senegal declined. Beyond Africa, Morocco broke into new markets in the Gulf, with the UAE importing 5,500 tons, accounting for 8.5% of total exports.
Onions remain one of Morocco’s top agricultural exports, ranking fourth behind tomatoes, bell peppers, and carrots. The export season typically peaks between July and September, with strong demand extending through January.
Resilience and diversification
The onion rebound is part of a broader recovery in Morocco’s agricultural exports. After lifting the same restrictions in 2024, the country also returned to the potato export market, signaling renewed momentum in its agricultural sector.
In less than a year, Morocco transitioned from a crisis in onion exports to a record-breaking season, underscoring the resilience of its farmers and its ability to adapt to market demands. With a strong presence in traditional West African markets and growing interest from new regions like the Gulf, Morocco has solidified its position as a key player in global vegetable trade.
