Morocco celebrates a significant milestone as it marks the 68th anniversary of the establishment of its esteemed Royal Armed Forces (FAR) on May 14th. Since its inception in 1956, less than two months after the nation's independence, the FAR has played a pivotal role in safeguarding Morocco's territorial integrity, promoting solidarity at home and abroad, and upholding peace on the global stage.

Forged by the late King Mohammed V, the FAR has evolved into a multi-faceted institution under the leadership of successive monarchs. Today, it comprises five branches: the Land Force, the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy, the Royal Moroccan Guard, and the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie, each contributing to the nation's security and stability.

The FAR's unwavering dedication to its mission has been tested throughout its history, including the attempted coup of 1972 by General Mohamed Oufkir, which led to the centralization of military command under the monarchy. This pivotal moment strengthened the FAR's commitment to upholding the nation's sovereignty and serving the interests of the Moroccan people.

Under the supreme command of King Mohammed VI, who has led the FAR for 24 years, the forces have undergone a comprehensive modernization process, enhancing their capabilities and readiness to confront contemporary challenges. The monarch's vision has propelled the FAR to new heights, ensuring its continued relevance in an ever-changing global landscape.

Beyond its national responsibilities, the FAR has made significant contributions to international peacekeeping efforts under the auspices of the United Nations. From Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Moroccan peacekeepers have played a crucial role in stabilizing conflict zones, providing humanitarian aid, and promoting lasting peace. This commitment to global security has earned Morocco recognition as one of the top ten contributors to UN peacekeeping operations.

In December 2023, during the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference in Accra, Ghana, Morocco reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing peacekeeping frameworks. The kingdom pledged to provide training and resources for civilian protection, combating disinformation, and promoting gender equality in peacekeeping operations, further solidifying its position as a reliable partner in promoting global peace and security.

Moreover, Morocco has taken a proactive stance in coordinating the Non-Aligned Movement's efforts on UN peacekeeping, underscoring its commitment to multilateral cooperation and diplomacy.

The FAR's impact extends beyond military operations, as demonstrated by its swift response to the Al Haouz earthquake, where it provided vital support to affected communities and participated in relief efforts. This commitment to humanitarianism reflects the values that underpin the FAR's mission.

As Moroccans commemorate the 68th anniversary of the FAR, they honor not only its storied history but also the men and women who serve with unwavering dedication and valor. Through continued investment in training, modernization, and international cooperation, the FAR stands ready to face the challenges of the future, upholding the values of peace, solidarity, and humanitarianism that have defined its legacy.
