Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Morocco's unwavering commitment to advancing artificial intelligence (AI) took center stage on Thursday as the Moroccan delegation presented before the African Union's (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC). The public session, themed "Envisioning the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Its Impact on Peace and Security in Africa," provided a platform for Morocco to showcase its proactive initiatives in shaping the first-ever United Nations resolution on AI.

The Moroccan delegation highlighted the Kingdom's active participation in the development of the groundbreaking UN resolution entitled "Harnessing Opportunities of Safe, Secure, and Reliable Artificial Intelligence Systems for Sustainable Development." Initially co-sponsored by Morocco and the United States, the resolution garnered the support of 123 UN member states before its adoption on March 21, 2024, underscoring Morocco's deep commitment to this vital domain.

This engagement, the delegation emphasized, finds its roots in the call made by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, in his Throne Day speech on July 30, 2008, advocating for the advancement of new technologies. Consequently, Morocco has undertaken numerous initiatives to promote AI, particularly in the areas of training, research, and development.

The Moroccan delegation reiterated that this historic resolution lays the foundation for collective international action towards a global governance framework for AI. Morocco played a pivotal role in negotiating the resolution, given its prominent positioning on the matter within the African continent. The Kingdom hosts the "AI Movement" international artificial intelligence center at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, the first of its kind in Africa and a pioneer in research and knowledge sharing on Moroccan AI expertise with fellow African nations.

Furthermore, Morocco recently organized the First High-Level Forum on Artificial Intelligence in Africa, held in Rabat from June 3 to 5, 2024, under the theme "Artificial Intelligence as a Lever for Development in Africa." Initiated by the aforementioned institutions in partnership with UNESCO, the forum witnessed the participation of representatives from over 30 countries, including 15 African nations, embodying Morocco's commitment to contributing innovative solutions for the development of African communities.

The Moroccan delegation emphasized, "If we manage to optimally harness AI, developing countries, in particular, will save time, money, energy, and human resources, which will undoubtedly have a tremendous impact on the factors and conditions contributing to the achievement and promotion of peace and security on the continent."

Morocco's pioneering efforts in the realm of artificial intelligence and its dedication to fostering collaborative ventures within the African context underscore the Kingdom's progressive vision and its determination to leverage cutting-edge technologies for sustainable growth and prosperity across the continent.
