Morocco is emerging as a key player in the global energy landscape, spotlighting its onshore and offshore sedimentary basins as prime territories for exploration. The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) is set to shine at this year's Invest in African Energy (IAE) forum, securing a significant Bronze Sponsorship.

Scheduled for May 14-15 in Paris, the City of Light, the forum will draw experts, investors, and policymakers from across the globe. ONHYM's presence at this esteemed event is particularly notable, with General Director Amina Benkhadra poised to address attendees on Morocco's latest advancements in gas exploration and production, midstream infrastructure, and innovative green hydrogen initiatives.

Morocco's energy sector is a hive of activity, as it actively promotes its sedimentary basins, attracting exploration companies keen to tap into its potential. The flagship Anchois gas development project, led by Chariot Oil & Gas, is on the brink of operation, set to exploit an estimated 18 billion cubic meters of gas reserves.

Recent discoveries in the El Gharb basin by companies like SDX Energy hint at the untapped potential beyond Morocco's proven basins, stirring the interests of industry stakeholders.

The IAE 2024 forum acts as a pivotal hub, facilitating investment between African energy markets and global players. With strategic initiatives like the Anchois project and Sound Energy's Tendrara conventional gas development, Morocco aims to meet a significant portion of its domestic gas needs, reducing costly imports.

A cornerstone of Morocco's energy strategy is the ambitious 5,600-km Nigeria-Morocco pipeline, set to transport Nigerian gas across 13 countries to Moroccan consumers. The eagerly awaited Final Investment Decision (FID) for this transformative project is anticipated in 2024.

Morocco's dedication to green hydrogen projects is unwavering, as evidenced by the allocation of one million hectares to attract investors and foster hydrogen development, leveraging abundant solar and wind resources.

Sandra Jeque, the Event and Project Director at Energy Capital and Power, organizers of IAE 2024, expressed delight at ONHYM's participation, highlighting Morocco's drive to enhance energy security and deepen integration with African projects and stakeholders.

"Morocco's commitment to energy security is evident in projects like the $25-billion Nigeria-Morocco pipeline and ambitious gas developments," she said. "We eagerly anticipate ONHYM's participation at the forum to showcase Morocco's diverse energy investment opportunities and bolster integration with African projects and stakeholders."

As the Invest in African Energy forum approaches, attention will be on Morocco's ONHYM as it steps into the spotlight as a Bronze Sponsor, highlighting the nation's energy capabilities and reinforcing its role as a regional leader in the pursuit of energy security and sustainable growth.
