Ghita Mezzour, the Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, recently unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at propelling Morocco towards digital transformation. Addressing a parliamentary question posed by the National Rally of Independents (RNI) group at the House of Representatives, Mezzour illuminated the nation's readiness for the next generation of mobile connectivity.

Central to these initiatives is the reconfiguration of the frequency spectrum and the liberation of frequency bands suitable for exploitation in 5G networks. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish fiber-optic connections linking base transceiver station (BTS) sites, a crucial infrastructure component for seamless 5G deployment.

Mezzour highlighted that Morocco's national digital development strategy, "Digital Morocco 2030," incorporates a dedicated aspect for 5G implementation, scheduled for a medium-term rollout. The advantages of 5G networks over their 4G counterparts are manifold, including the ability to transfer vast amounts of data at unprecedented speeds, process massive volumes of data with minimal latency, and enable intensive application usage across smart homes, buildings, cities, and vehicles.

However, these novel use cases and the requisite investments for 5G network deployment necessitate a reconsideration of the economic model, diverging from the traditional 4G service model. Mezzour noted that leveraging 5G coverage will require compatible equipment, emphasizing the technological readiness necessary for its successful adoption.

Moreover, Mezzour emphasized the pivotal role of 5G in facilitating Morocco's bid to host the 2030 World Cup. Ensuring comprehensive 5G coverage in venues associated with the global event, such as stadiums, training sites, and fan zones, is an indispensable prerequisite for a successful hosting endeavor.

As Morocco prepares to usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, the government's proactive initiatives underscore its commitment to digital transformation and its ambition to position the nation as a formidable contender on the global stage. The 5G rollout not only promises to revolutionize communication and data transfer but also serves as a catalyst for innovation, economic growth, and enhanced experiences for citizens and visitors alike.
