In the ever-evolving landscape of gender equality, Morocco emerges as a focal point, as the 2024 Women's Safety Index, unveiled by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security (GIWPS), sheds light on the nation's persistent challenges. Ranked 114th out of 177 countries assessed, with a score of 0.637 on the index scale, Morocco's journey towards equality is fraught with complexities.

While surpassing some regional counterparts like Algeria, Libya, and Lebanon, Morocco's 10th place among Arab nations underscores the ongoing obstacles faced by women within the kingdom. This comprehensive index evaluates various facets of women's status, rights, and contributions to peace and security, encompassing areas such as education, perceptions of security, parliamentary representation, maternal health, legal protections, and proximity to armed conflicts.

In a global arena where Denmark leads the pack, followed by Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland, Morocco's ranking serves as a stark reminder of the uphill battle ahead. Conversely, Afghanistan's position at the bottom of the list highlights the stark contrasts in progress among nations championing women's empowerment.

Despite some advancements in education, financial inclusion, and technology usage, Morocco continues to grapple with significant challenges, particularly in combating domestic violence and addressing political instability. The latest report from the Higher Commission of Planning (HCP) in 2022 paints a grim picture, revealing that a staggering 73% of the 15 million active population outside the labor force are women. Moreover, an alarming 80% of Morocco's working-age female population remains excluded from the labor market, defying regional norms and emphasizing the urgent need for systemic change.

As Morocco stands at this critical juncture, it faces the imperative of unwavering commitment, progressive policies, and steadfast dedication to safeguarding the rights and dignity of all citizens, regardless of gender. The nation's path forward demands a concerted effort to address systemic issues and promote inclusivity, ensuring that women can thrive in a safe and equitable environment.
