Morocco promotes digital sovereignty model at GITEX Africa 2026
GITEX Africa 2026 opened in Marrakech with more than 50,000 participants attending three days of technology exchanges, investment pitches, and partnerships. The event stands as one of the continent’s largest gatherings focused on digital innovation and entrepreneurship.
At the opening session, Digital Transition Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni said Morocco is advancing a strategy that places technology at the center of national sovereignty and economic development. She described the country’s approach as a shift from planning to execution, driven by rapid global changes in technology and geopolitics.
The minister said Morocco is not seeking direct competition with major global powers. Instead, it aims to build what she called a distinct model, based on integrating artificial intelligence and digital tools into public policy and economic growth. She referred to this approach as a “third way” that reflects national priorities while engaging with global systems.
According to the minister, the model relies on four pillars. The first focuses on practical digital sovereignty that serves public interest. The second promotes a form of modernity aligned with Morocco’s social and cultural context. The third emphasizes balanced technological partnerships connecting Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic region. The fourth positions Morocco as a platform for international dialogue on artificial intelligence and digital governance.
She said Morocco’s geographic position and network of partnerships give it an advantage in hosting discussions on ethical AI. The country aims to support frameworks that balance innovation with responsibility and national control over digital infrastructure.
The event highlights Morocco’s effort to strengthen its role in global digital transformation while contributing to Africa’s broader technology ecosystem.
