Morocco Emerges as a Leading Force in African AI, Affirms New Report
Morocco is swiftly solidifying its status as a prominent player in artificial intelligence (AI) on the African continent, as indicated by a recently published report from Oxford Insights. The Government AI Readiness Index 2023 meticulously assessed 193 countries across ten dimensions related to their capacity for integrating AI into public services.
Remarkably, Morocco secured the fifth position among African nations and 88th globally, boasting an overall score of 43.34 out of 100. On the African continent, only Mauritius, Egypt, South Africa, and Tunisia outperformed Morocco. Within the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Morocco claimed the 12th spot, surpassing Iran, Algeria, and Iraq.
Morocco exhibited commendable performance across all three evaluation pillars, earning scores of 37.54 for government initiatives, 35.69 for its technology sector, and 56.79 for existing data and infrastructure. This signifies that Morocco has laid a robust foundation to advance its national AI agenda.
The impact of AI is already reverberating across various Moroccan industries, including healthcare, finance, education, transportation, and e-commerce. According to a recent report by MoroccoAI, the country has made significant strides through academic institutions, participation in international conferences, implementation of training programs, and the establishment of large-scale data centers.
As AI continues to reshape economies globally, Morocco is positioning itself as a responsible leader in the development of transformative technologies. Backed by supportive policies and a thriving ecosystem, the country demonstrates substantial potential to evolve into a regional AI powerhouse. The latest index underscores Morocco's emergence on the global stage as a frontrunner in advanced technologies.
