Morocco elected vice President of FAO council in Rome
Morocco has been elected as Vice President of the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during the 179th session of the UN agency held in Rome. The Kingdom will serve on the FAO Council, which consists of 49 members, until 2029. This council oversees the implementation of the organization’s policies and strategic programs.
Youssef Balla, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UN agencies in Rome, led the Moroccan delegation and highlighted the country’s commitment to a rigorous review of the 2026-2027 work program and budget adjustments. Morocco welcomed the reallocation of $5 million USD to priority areas, including the Technical Cooperation Program (TCP), the Codex Alimentarius, and other key sectors, aiming to enhance support for developing countries and improve the FAO’s overall performance.
Ambassador Balla also praised efforts to advance digital transformation, environmental sustainability, and results-based management, emphasizing the need for a modern, efficient, and impact-oriented FAO. The conference will also address organizational reforms to strengthen governance and enhance the agency’s ability to respond to global food security challenges, amid mounting pressures on food markets and the effects of climate change.
