Morocco, Brazil: A Promising Partnership for Enhancing Food Security in Africa

In a demonstration of solidarity against the pressing issue of hunger, Morocco and Brazil have discovered common ground in their commitment to promoting food security across the African continent. The Moroccan Ambassador to Brazil, Nabil Adghoghi, has expressed optimism regarding the potential for a robust and tangible partnership between the two nations, drawing upon Brazil's extensive agricultural expertise and Africa's unwavering determination to achieve self-sufficiency.

During the Africa Day celebrations at Brazil's Foreign Ministry, Adghoghi highlighted the alignment between President Lula da Silva's recently launched Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty and Morocco's long-standing emphasis on ensuring food security on the African continent, a strategic priority that has been at the forefront of His Majesty King Mohammed VI's African policy.

Adghoghi underscored the urgency of addressing the looming food security challenges that Africa is expected to face by 2050, citing the continent's rapidly growing population, low agricultural productivity, heavy reliance on imports, and the exacerbating effects of climate change. However, he also acknowledged Africa's proactive approach, pointing to recent conferences in Rabat and Nairobi that focused on agricultural adaptation and fertilizer use.

Morocco has taken a proactive stance in sharing its expertise with African nations through various initiatives, including the establishment of the African Consortium for Agricultural Innovation and partnerships with the World Bank. The Moroccan Phosphates Office (OCP) has emerged as a significant supplier of fertilizers and agricultural know-how across the continent, with production facilities and mobile laboratories deployed to provide on-the-ground support. A recent collaboration between OCP and the World Bank aims to empower millions of West African farmers.

Adghoghi commended Brazil's remarkable transformation from a food importer to a major exporter, highlighting the country's significant increase in grain production achieved with minimal land use expansion.
