Morocco Assumes Leadership of UN Human Rights Council with Broad International Support

Rabat - In a significant diplomatic achievement, Morocco secured extensive international support last week as it assumed the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the year 2023. Out of the 47 council members, 30 voted in favor of Morocco during a session held on Wednesday.

Among the nations applauding Morocco's new role was Spain, whose Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, characterized Morocco as a "friendly and neighboring country." Albares expressed Spain's satisfaction that such a country was entrusted with this crucial international position and reaffirmed Spain's commitment to fostering its strategic partnership with Rabat.

The United States also conveyed congratulations on the election. Michele Taylor, the US Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, extended "heartfelt congratulations" to Moroccan Ambassador Omar Zniber. Taylor conveyed excitement about the prospect of collaboration with Morocco to advance global human rights, emphasizing the potential for unified efforts to promote universal respect and equality.

Morocco celebrated the election outcome as a reflection of the "confidence and credibility inspired by Morocco’s foreign action" under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, both in Africa and on the international stage, as well as within various multilateral institutions.

Assuming the presidency at a time of numerous global crises, Morocco has articulated an ambitious agenda for its year-long term. A key focus will be the commitment to prioritize the fight against racism, aligning with the nation's dedication to fostering human rights on a global scale.
