Morocco and Spain Share the Spotlight in the Global Tomato Market
In a remarkable display of dominance, Morocco and Spain have emerged as the reigning tomato titans, each exporting an impressive 658.7 million kilos in 2023, according to the specialized portal Hortoinfo. This achievement is all the more notable considering the relentless drought that has gripped the world. Morocco has faced this challenge head-on, solidifying its position as a formidable force in the global tomato market.
Despite these daunting obstacles, 2023 witnessed a historic milestone as the value of global tomato exports soared to a staggering €10,611.26 million, surpassing the previous record set in 2022 by €300 million. This triumph was achieved despite a global decline in export volumes for the second consecutive year since the historic peak of 8,678.75 million kilos in 2021, with 2023's figures dipping to 7,630.23 million kilos.
The Hortoinfo report, based on data from the United Nations Statistics Division, highlights Morocco's unwavering ascent in the global tomato market, defying challenges and asserting its dominance alongside Spain.
A Shift in the Tomato Tide
In a remarkable turn of events, Morocco and Spain have reached parity in terms of exported quantities, a feat that seemed unimaginable a decade ago. In 2013, Spain held a commanding lead over Morocco, exporting 1,026.76 million kilos compared to Morocco's 457.93 million kilos, a staggering 124.74% advantage. However, the tides have shifted. By 2021, Spain's lead had dwindled to a mere 5.24%, culminating in the virtual deadlock witnessed in 2023, with Morocco holding a slender lead of just 22,952 kilos.
Morocco's contribution of 658.75 million kilos accounted for an impressive 8.63% of global tomato exports, equaling Spain's share. This remarkable achievement places Morocco among the top four tomato exporters globally, alongside Mexico (2,010.31 million kilos, 26.35%), the Netherlands (864.96 million kilos, 11.34%), and Spain (658.72 million kilos, 8.63%).
Other notable exporters include Turkey (586.63 million kilos), Afghanistan (327.34 million kilos), France (315.25 million kilos), Portugal (234.28 million kilos), Canada (212.32 million kilos), and Belgium (207.44 million kilos).
Revenue and Export Prices
In terms of revenue, Morocco generated €1,054.77 million in 2023, securing the fourth position globally. This impressive figure surpassed France (€735.43 million) and is swiftly closing in on Spain (€1,091.48 million). Mexico remains the leader with €2,817.46 million, followed by the Netherlands with €1,779.86 million.
When it comes to the average price of exported tomatoes, Morocco ranks sixth with €1.60 per kilo. Italy commands the highest price at €2.93 per kilo, followed by France (€2.33), Canada (€2.26), the Netherlands (€2.06), and Spain (€1.66).
Destinations for Moroccan Exports
The primary markets for Moroccan tomatoes in 2023 were France (340.31 million kilos), the United Kingdom (121.3 million kilos), the Netherlands (61.54 million kilos), Spain (44.69 million kilos), and Mauritania (25.73 million kilos).
Morocco has solidified its position in Europe, leveraging its trade agreements and geographic proximity to efficiently access European markets. Despite challenges such as drought and boycotts, Morocco continues to reinforce its position as a leader in the global tomato market, a testament to its resilience and unwavering commitment to excellence.
