Morocco and France strengthen parliamentary ties ahead of inter-parliamentary forum

The Moroccan and French parliaments have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation as part of preparations for the upcoming Franco-Moroccan Inter-Parliamentary Forum. This initiative aims to deepen collaboration on political, diplomatic, and parliamentary levels, building on a long history of close relations.

High-level meeting underscores shared priorities

Morocco’s House of Representatives President, Rachid Talbi Alami, met with the French National Assembly President, Yaël Braun-Pivet, during the 50th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF), held from July 9-13. Both leaders emphasized the strong political and parliamentary ties between their countries and discussed ways to further strengthen them.

The meeting highlighted the sustained coordination between Moroccan and French parliaments within international parliamentary institutions. Both parties committed to fostering collaboration through mechanisms such as expertise exchanges, parliamentary visits, and the activation of parliamentary friendship groups.

Focus on gender equality and women’s role in parliament

Deputy Latifa Lablih, a member of the Francophone Parliamentary Women’s Network, underscored Morocco’s leadership in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. She highlighted Morocco’s pivotal role in establishing the network and its ongoing efforts to share best practices with African parliaments.

Lablih credited King Mohammed VI’s leadership for Morocco’s progress in advancing women’s rights, noting that these achievements have become a model for other nations in the Francophone space.

A framework for future cooperation

The meeting also provided a platform for discussing regional and international issues of mutual interest, particularly within the Francophone world. Both sides reaffirmed their dedication to using the Franco-Moroccan Inter-Parliamentary Forum as a key venue for addressing shared challenges and opportunities.

In December 2024, the Moroccan and French parliaments signed a cooperation protocol to formalize their partnership. The agreement established mechanisms for deepening relations based on equality, trust, and reciprocity, further solidifying the foundation for future collaboration.

As both nations prepare for the next session of the inter-parliamentary forum, their partnership remains a cornerstone of their diplomatic and parliamentary engagement.
