Morocco advances wind energy capacity with major investments

Morocco’s progress in renewable energy has reached new heights, with wind energy capacity hitting 2,373 megawatts (MW) by the end of 2024. This milestone marks a significant step in the country’s push toward greener energy solutions, as outlined by Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, during a recent session at the House of Representatives.

Expanding the wind power sector

Benali highlighted the country’s ambitious multi-year strategy, which aims to add 2.6 gigawatts (GW) of wind power between 2023 and 2027. This initiative, involving investments exceeding MAD 36 billion ($3.6 billion), is part of Morocco’s broader efforts to enhance renewable energy infrastructure. Projects have been developed under contracting agreements governed by Law 13-09 for renewable energy, as well as for self-production purposes.

Economic and industrial impacts

Beyond energy production, Morocco’s wind power projects are fostering industrial growth and generating employment. According to Benali, these initiatives are strengthening local expertise by relying on Moroccan manpower and utilizing equipment and services from domestic companies. This approach adds considerable value to the national economy while promoting sustainable development.

Harnessing Morocco’s geographic advantages

Morocco’s geographic features provide a competitive edge in wind energy generation. Key regions such as the Atlantic coast and the Tangier area boast wind speeds ranging from 7.5 to 11 meters per second, offering ideal conditions for wind farms. Offshore wind resources also present untapped opportunities for further expansion.

A regional benchmark for sustainability

Morocco’s commitment to renewable energy positions it as a leader in the region’s green transition. By integrating cutting-edge technology with local expertise, the country is not only expanding its clean energy footprint but also setting a benchmark for sustainable energy practices in North Africa and beyond.

While challenges persist, Morocco’s steadfast progress in wind energy demonstrates its dedication to a sustainable future, reinforcing its role as a model for environmentally conscious development.
