Moroccan National Team Benefits from Optimal Training Conditions in San Pedro Ahead of AFCON 2023
The Moroccan national football team has seamlessly settled into their training camp in San Pedro, Côte d'Ivoire, gearing up for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Head coach Walid Regragui commended the decision to arrive early in the host city, asserting that the "training environment in San Pedro is ideal."
Despite the last-minute cancellation of a friendly match against Gambia, the additional days in San Pedro have allowed the players to acclimate to the hot and humid conditions. Regragui highlighted the significance of this adjustment, stating, "It’s beneficial for players to adapt to this heat." He expressed gratitude to the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) for providing exceptional accommodations, staff, and training facilities.
A Thursday friendly against Sierra Leone enabled the team to practice under the same 2 PM kickoff time as their second AFCON group stage match. “We recognized that the heat would be a determining factor for our success,” remarked Regragui. Although acknowledging the need for some refinement, the coach expressed confidence in the team's potential.
Despite the pressure of high expectations, Regragui conveyed that the players are motivated to recreate the success and emotions of their impressive 2022 World Cup run, where Morocco became the first African team to reach the semi-finals.
Drawn into Group F alongside Tanzania, DR Congo, and Zambia, the Atlas Lions will kick off their AFCON campaign against Tanzania on January 17. Regragui underscored the importance of having a full-strength squad for the first game to establish their style of play.
With their sights set on the trophy, the Moroccan national team appears poised for a robust performance in AFCON 2023. Their optimal training environment in San Pedro has readied the team to bring their trademark fight and flair to the pitch.
