Moroccan inmates to receive food baskets for Eid Al Fitr

The Moroccan prison authority has announced a significant policy shift allowing inmates to receive food baskets for Eid Al Fitr, marking a rare exception to the usual regulations surrounding prison visits. This initiative is set to commence on the second day of Eid and will be available for one week, in accordance with a schedule established by prison officials.

In an official statement, the General Delegation for Prison Administration emphasized that this decision seeks to enhance the mental well-being of prisoners while fostering stronger connections with their families during this important religious celebration. The policy extends to foreign inmates, who will also be permitted to receive food baskets through their respective diplomatic and consular representatives.

To facilitate this initiative, prisons will ensure that inmates have the necessary means to communicate with their families, providing clear guidelines regarding the conditions under which food baskets may be delivered.

The prison administration has urged families to act responsibly in this process to ensure the initiative's success. Additionally, they have issued a warning against any attempts to exploit this opportunity to smuggle prohibited items into the facilities, as such actions could jeopardize the safety and security of the prison environment.

As Morocco prepares to celebrate Eid Al Fitr, expected on Monday based on astronomical calculations, the official confirmation will depend on the moon sighting committee's observation of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The sighting is scheduled for Sunday evening, with the possibility of Eid being observed on either Monday or Tuesday, contingent on the visibility of the moon.
