Moroccan Airports Soar to New Heights: Record-Breaking Passenger Traffic in 2023
Morocco's airports are experiencing unprecedented success as the nation celebrates a surge in the number of travelers passing through its gates. The Moroccan Office National des Aéroports (ONDA) recently revealed that passenger traffic reached an all-time high of over 27 million in 2023, marking an impressive 32% increase.
Notably, international flights recorded the most substantial gains, witnessing a remarkable 32% surge to nearly 24.5 million passengers compared to the previous year. The growth in traffic was widespread, with particularly robust increases from Europe (32%), the Middle East and Far East (32%), Africa (45%), and North America (28%).
This remarkable expansion was fueled by the introduction of new international routes connecting Morocco's diverse airports such as Marrakech, Agadir, Rabat, Oujda, Fez, Tangier, Essaouira, and Nador to cities worldwide, including Bilbao, Doha, Luxembourg, Warsaw, Geneva, and Düsseldorf.
The boost in airport traffic was widespread, with double-digit increases reported at major hubs across the country. Marrakech led the way with an impressive 41% growth, followed by Rabat at 38%, and Tangier experiencing a significant 34% rise. Fez enjoyed a 31% spike in passengers, Agadir jumped 30%, and Nador saw a solid 22% increase. Even Oujda airport witnessed a respectable 10% upturn in traffic.
This positive development underscores Morocco's airports as emerging premier global gateways. The ongoing expansion of routes and the steady increase in passenger volumes augur well for the nation's thriving tourism sector and burgeoning economic connectivity in 2024 and beyond.
