Measles death toll exceeds 500 in Bangladesh amid severe nationwide outbreak
A severe measles outbreak in Bangladesh has caused more than 500 suspected and confirmed deaths, according to health authorities, marking one of the country’s most serious public health crises in decades.
Officials reported that at least 86 children have died from laboratory-confirmed measles infections this year, while hundreds of additional deaths are considered consistent with measles-related symptoms. The outbreak has spread rapidly across the country, placing immense pressure on hospitals and healthcare facilities.
Health data released by the Directorate General of Health Services indicates that more than 62,000 suspected cases and over 8,000 confirmed infections have been recorded between mid-March and late May. The rapid increase in infections has overwhelmed medical infrastructure, particularly in rural regions and densely populated urban settlements.
Children under the age of five are the most affected group, especially those who have not received full vaccination. Health experts emphasize that incomplete immunization significantly increases the risk of severe complications and death.
The World Health Organization has previously warned that declining vaccination coverage in recent years has raised the likelihood of large-scale outbreaks in several countries, including Bangladesh.
In response, authorities have launched emergency vaccination campaigns targeting young children, aiming to contain the spread of the disease and reduce mortality rates. Health workers are also increasing awareness efforts to encourage parents to vaccinate their children.
Medical professionals describe the situation as a major public health emergency, stressing the importance of immunization programs and rapid response measures to prevent further loss of life.
