Marrakech's Iconic Koutoubia Mosque Reopens its Doors After Earthquake Restoration

In a historic move celebrated by the faithful, Marrakech's iconic Koutoubia Mosque has once again welcomed worshippers after undergoing extensive renovations following September's devastating earthquake. The reopening, mandated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, stands as a triumphant moment for the city's spiritual core and underscores Morocco's resilience.

The Koutoubia Mosque, a towering emblem of Marrakech's vibrant cultural legacy, was among the 43 mosques nationwide that suffered damage from the 6.8-magnitude quake on September 8th, resulting in nearly 3,000 fatalities and over 5,600 injuries. According to a report released on Friday by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, 17 of the affected mosques were newly constructed, while 24, including the Koutoubia, underwent extensive restoration efforts.

Abderrahim Baghezli, the regional delegate for Endowments and Islamic Affairs in the Marrakech-Safi region, highlighted the profound significance of the mosque's reopening. He stated that the restoration process was meticulously executed with scientific and technical precision to ensure the preservation of the monument's original magnificence.

"The reopening of the mosque has uplifted the spirits of all worshippers," remarked Baghezli, underscoring the deep bond between the people of Marrakech and their revered spiritual landmark. "The regional delegation of Islamic affairs has taken steps to enhance the esplanade adjacent to the Mosque to accommodate the influx of worshippers during the Ichaa prayer and Taraweeh (nightly prayers) in Ramadan."

Social media platforms have been inundated with expressions of joy and gratitude as the faithful celebrate the resumption of prayers at the Koutoubia, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. The mosque's majestic 77-meter minaret and its expansive 5,300-square-meter interior, capable of accommodating 25,000 worshippers, have long been a source of pride for the people of Marrakech.

The reopening of the Koutoubia Mosque signifies a resounding triumph for the city's spirit, a testament to the unwavering resolve of its inhabitants, and a shining exemplar of Morocco's dedication to safeguarding its rich cultural heritage in the face of adversity.
