Marrakech Celebrates its Designation as 2024 Islamic World Capital of Culture with Commemorative Stamp
Barid Al-Maghrib, Morocco’s national postal service, has unveiled a new commemorative stamp to honor Marrakech’s prestigious title as the Islamic World Capital of Culture for 2024. In partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the release marks another milestone in the post office’s ongoing tradition of celebrating Morocco’s rich cultural heritage through philatelic design.
The stamp, titled "Marrakech, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World for 2024," features an image of the iconic Menara Pavilion, a symbol of the city’s architectural elegance. Set against a stunning backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, the pavilion is reflected in the serene waters of its basin, framed by lush palm trees. The warm ochre hues and intricate patterns in the design encapsulate Marrakech's historic and cultural significance, reinforcing its role as a key cultural hub in the region.
In a statement, Barid Al-Maghrib emphasized its commitment to honoring Morocco’s cultural milestones. The new stamp joins a series of previous commemorations of Marrakech, including a 2017 stamp celebrating Jemaa El Fna Square and a 1960 stamp marking the city’s 900th anniversary. These initiatives reflect the nation’s enduring pride in its cities’ cultural contributions to the world.
The unveiling ceremony took place on Sunday, December 8, in Marrakech, with key figures in attendance, including the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid; Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, President of the Marrakech Communal Council; and Salim Mohamed Al Malik, Director-General of ICESCO. Barid Al-Maghrib’s Director-General, Amin Benjelloun Touimi, also participated in the event.
Marrakech’s designation as the Islamic World Capital of Culture is a significant achievement, reinforcing the city’s global cultural importance. With this commemorative stamp, Barid Al-Maghrib continues to recognize the remarkable cultural legacy of Moroccan cities that have received similar accolades, such as Fez, which was honored in 2007.
The release of the Marrakech stamp serves not only as a celebration of the city’s new cultural milestone but also as a testament to Morocco’s vibrant and enduring cultural legacy on the world stage.
