Maroc Telecom and EU discuss digital sovereignty at GITEX Africa 2026

Morocco’s telecom operator Maroc Telecom held talks with the European Commission on digital sovereignty during GITEX Africa 2026 in Marrakech, highlighting shared priorities on infrastructure security and data governance.

The meeting brought together Maroc Telecom CEO Mohamed Benchaaboun and European Commission Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen. Discussions focused on protecting critical digital infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity, and ensuring control over data flows.

Maroc Telecom said digital sovereignty is a core operational responsibility rather than an abstract concept. The company emphasized its role in managing infrastructure that connects tens of millions of users across Morocco and other African markets.

Benchaaboun said sovereignty involves securing networks, maintaining control over transmitted data, and ensuring system resilience against cyber threats. He added that cooperation between the European Union and Africa can help address these challenges at scale.

The discussions also reflected broader alignment between European and African digital strategies. Both sides identified common interests in building secure and sustainable technological ecosystems, particularly in the face of increasing cybersecurity risks.

Maroc Telecom reiterated its commitment to investing in next generation networks, cloud infrastructure, and cybersecurity systems. The company said these investments are essential to developing a resilient digital environment that supports economic growth across the continent.

The operator reported annual revenue of MAD 36.7 billion, or about $4 billion, with a 1.4 percent increase compared to the previous year. Growth was driven in part by a 5.3 percent rise in international operations.

The exchange at GITEX Africa underscores the event’s role as a platform for strategic dialogue on digital policy, infrastructure, and cross regional cooperation in an increasingly interconnected technology landscape.
