Marhaba 2024: Spain Readies Itself for the Annual Influx

As the summer season approaches, the Spanish authorities have unveiled a comprehensive plan to tackle the anticipated surge in traffic during the upcoming "Marhaba" operation, set to commence in June. The Ministry of Interior has given the green light to the plan during a meeting of the State Coordination and Direction Committee (CECOD), aimed at ensuring an effective response to the expected increase in the flow of people and vehicles toward Moroccan ports during the summer period.

According to the figures presented, this year's operation is expected to witness a 6% rise in the number of vehicles and a 4% increase in the number of passengers compared to the previous year. Susana Crisóstomo, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, underscored the significance of this operation, which is considered the largest movement of people and vehicles by sea in Europe and across the globe.

Notably, the start date for the operation has been brought forward by two days, to June 13th, to accommodate Moroccans wishing to return home and celebrate the Eid Al-Adha festivities.

On the Spanish side, preparations involve a 5% increase in the personnel dedicated to the Civil Protection and Emergency services for the operation. In Ceuta, the staffing levels will see an 18% boost. Additionally, the adopted plan identifies critical days expected to experience the highest influx of vehicles and passengers during the months of June, August, and September (June 14th and 6th; between August 1st and 5th; and between August 30th and September 1st).

As Spain braces for the annual Marhaba influx, the meticulously designed plan underscores the nation's commitment to facilitating the seamless movement of travelers while ensuring the utmost safety and efficiency. With enhanced personnel and proactive measures in place, the authorities aim to navigate the challenges posed by the substantial surge in traffic, fostering a smooth and well-coordinated operation for all involved.
