Majority bloc backs Nouri Al-Maliki for Iraqi prime minister
Iraq’s main Shiite political alliance, which holds a majority in parliament, has announced its support for former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to return to office. The decision reflects ongoing negotiations to form a new government following recent political developments in the country.
The Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shiite factions with varying degrees of political ties to Iran, confirmed in a statement that it had voted in favor of nominating Mr. Al-Maliki. According to the alliance, the decision was approved by a majority of its members, granting him the status of candidate from the largest parliamentary bloc.
Nouri al-Maliki previously served as Iraq’s prime minister and remains a prominent figure in the country’s political landscape. His potential return comes at a time when Iraq faces significant challenges, including political stability, economic recovery, and regional tensions.
The nomination is expected to influence further negotiations among political groups as Iraq moves toward the formation of its next government.
