In the wake of embezzlement scandals and allegations of mismanagement, the Fez-Meknes Regional Tourism Council has chosen Khalid Benamour as its new president in hopes of restoring integrity and good governance.

Benamour was unanimously elected on Monday during a gathering of tourism stakeholders in Fez. He takes over the reins from Aziz Lebbar, who resigned last month citing personal reasons. Lebbar had led the Council amid reports of rampant corruption and financial impropriety.

As the outgoing representative for hospitality businesses in the region, Benamour is seen as a respected figure in the local tourism industry. He faces the immense challenge of cleaning house and repairing the Council's tattered reputation.

For too long, allegations of misused funds and dubious dealings have dogged the body charged with promoting one of Morocco's premier cultural destinations. Just last week, conflicting reports emerged of another candidate being named president in what appeared to be an opaque selection process.

Now, all eyes are on Benamour to bring transparency and accountability to the Council. With Fez boasting a rich historical heritage but struggling with governance woes, tourism stakeholders hope new leadership can turned the page on past misdeeds and refocus on bolstering visitor numbers.

Benamour’s election comes at a pivotal time for the region. Strong, ethical leadership will be key to restoring confidence that tourism revenues are being properly managed and investment is being directed to best benefit the local community.

Only time will tell if the new president can stem the tide of scandals and revitalize Fez's reputation, but for now a fresh start provides renewed optimism for those striving to showcase Morocco’s cultural gems to the world.
