Iran's President Offers Olive Branch: Direct Talks with US on the Table
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has extended an invitation for direct talks with the United States, contingent on Washington's willingness to abandon its hostile stance towards the Islamic Republic. This development comes at a critical juncture in the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
Speaking at a news conference in Tehran, Pezeshkian emphasized Iran's openness to dialogue, stating, "We are not hostile toward the US. They should end their hostility toward us by demonstrating goodwill in practice." He further added, "We are brothers with the Americans, and a path to mutual understanding is possible."
The offer for direct talks is a significant shift from Iran's previous position, which had refused to engage in direct negotiations with Washington. Instead, Tehran had relied on European and Arab intermediaries to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, which former US President Donald Trump had abandoned in 2018.
Pezeshkian's remarks also addressed the recent tensions in the Middle East, including the escalating conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in southern Lebanon. He warned that the window for a diplomatic solution was closing, urging all parties to seek a peaceful resolution.
Furthermore, the Iranian president denied allegations that Tehran had supplied hypersonic missiles to Yemen's Houthi rebels. This follows claims by the Houthis that they had fired a hypersonic missile at Israel, a development that has raised concerns about the proliferation of advanced weaponry in the region.
