India’s youth-led ‘cockroach movement’ says founder detained during education protests

India’s youth-led “cockroach movement” has claimed that its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, was taken into police custody on Monday as activists continued protests demanding accountability over alleged exam paper leaks and calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The group, known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), said the reported detention occurred as two of its representatives met with Health Minister J.P. Nadda in New Delhi to discuss their demands.

Protesters seek action over exam concerns

The demonstrations are centered on allegations of irregularities in competitive examinations, with young activists urging the government to take stronger measures to address concerns affecting students.

The movement had planned a march toward Parliament during the opening day of the monsoon session, increasing pressure on authorities over the issue.

CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said after meeting the health minister that government representatives had agreed to review the concerns raised by protesters.

Government meeting amid rising pressure

According to the group, discussions with Nadda lasted around 10 minutes, during which activists presented their demands in writing.

Das said the minister had indicated he would raise the matter internally, although no immediate announcement regarding policy changes or official action was made.

The meeting came as protesters continued calling for greater transparency in the examination system and stronger protections for students.

An unusual name for a youth movement

The Cockroach Janta Party has attracted attention in India because of its unconventional name and youth-driven approach to political activism.

The movement uses the image of a cockroach as a symbol of resilience and persistence, according to its supporters, who say it represents young people’s determination to continue raising social and political concerns.

Its activities have gained visibility through demonstrations and online campaigns, particularly among young Indians focused on education-related issues.

Student activism remains a major public issue

Concerns over examination systems, recruitment processes and opportunities for young people have become recurring topics in Indian public debate.

The latest protests highlight the growing role of youth-led groups in demanding institutional reforms and greater accountability from authorities.
