ICC prosecutor allegations remain under review despite media report of exoneration
Allegations of sexual misconduct against Karim Khan, head of the International Criminal Court (ICC), continue to be reviewed by the court’s executive branch, according to an internal memo shared with staff on Sunday, despite media reports suggesting he had been cleared.
Khan, responsible for investigating war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, temporarily stepped aside as the allegations, involving a non-consensual sexual relationship with a lawyer in his office, are investigated. The prosecutor denies any wrongdoing.
A confidential fact-finding report prepared by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) was submitted to the ICC’s executive branch in December 2025 after a year-long inquiry. Last Saturday, a Middle East Eye report stated that Khan had been exonerated.
However, the memo from Paivi Kaukoranta, stressed that “the disciplinary process before the Bureau is ongoing and remains confidential. No decisions have been taken, and no weight should be given to recent media speculation.”
Neither the ICC, the prosecutor’s office, the Assembly, nor Khan’s external legal representatives provided comments when contacted outside of normal working hours.
The ongoing situation underscores the sensitivity of internal investigations at the ICC amid a broader context of scrutiny, US sanctions, and concerns about transparency in the court’s operations.
