Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 expansion proposal submitted to central government
The government of the Indian state of Telangana has submitted a major proposal to the central government for the expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, aiming to significantly extend urban rail connectivity in the capital city Hyderabad.
The proposed Phase 2 project covers an estimated 162 kilometres of new metro lines, divided into multiple corridors designed to improve public transportation efficiency and reduce traffic congestion in one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas.
According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the proposal includes two major components: Phase II, spanning around 76.4 km across five corridors, and Phase II (B), covering approximately 86.1 km across three corridors. The submission has been formally received by the central government and is currently under review.
Officials stated that the expansion plan aims to strengthen urban mobility, support economic growth, and provide better connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial zones in Hyderabad.
The proposal was mentioned in the Indian Parliament during a written response by a junior minister, highlighting growing political attention to infrastructure development in major cities.
If approved, the project would mark one of the largest expansions of the Hyderabad Metro network since its initial launch, reinforcing its role as a key public transport backbone for the region.
