In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Lebanon's Hezbollah has launched a ballistic missile targeting the Mossad's headquarters near Tel Aviv, marking a significant development in the ongoing cross-border hostilities. Warning sirens echoed through the city as Israeli air defense systems intercepted the surface-to-surface missile, detected crossing from Lebanon.

The attack, claimed by Hezbollah, is said to be in retaliation for Israel's recent bombardment of Lebanon, which has resulted in a devastating loss of life and forced thousands to flee. With at least 500 fatalities and tens of thousands displaced, the situation in Lebanon is dire.

This is the first time the Iran-backed group has claimed a ballistic missile strike since the hostilities with Israel began in October, triggered by the war on Gaza. In a statement, Hezbollah declared, "The Islamic Resistance launched a 'Qader 1' ballistic missile, targeting the Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv's outskirts. This headquarters is responsible for the assassination of leaders and the explosion of pagers and wireless devices."

Hezbollah further emphasized that the strike was a show of support for the people of Gaza and a defense of Lebanon and its people. The Israeli military confirmed that this was the first instance of a projectile fired from Lebanon reaching central Israel.

Hezbollah had previously claimed to have targeted an intelligence base near Tel Aviv in an aerial attack last month, but this was not confirmed by Israel. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in Israel, and the military maintained that there was no change to civil defense instructions for central Israel.

The Israeli Air Force, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated that its planes had struck the launcher from which the missile was fired in the Nafakhiyeh area of Lebanon. This strike was part of a larger operation, with the Israeli military reporting that Hezbollah had also launched attacks on the occupied Syrian region of the Golan Heights and near Mount Carmel in northern Israel.

Reports from Marjayoun in Lebanon, suggested that the missile strike on Tel Aviv was a calculated move by Hezbollah to send a powerful message. "It's a single missile, indicating that it's likely a message from Hezbollah, showcasing their ballistic missile capability," Khan said. "The Israeli army claims their missile defense system intercepted it, but the concern for Israel is the potential overwhelming of their defense systems."

As Israel continues its relentless bombardment of Lebanon, fears of a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah are rising. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported that Israeli strikes on Monday killed at least 558 people and wounded hundreds, making it the deadliest day of violence in the country since its 1975-90 civil war.

The conflict's impact is felt across the Middle East, with Iran-backed groups joining Hezbollah in the fight against Israel's war on Gaza. The shift in Israel's focus from Gaza to Lebanon has raised concerns about a regional conflagration, with the potential for further escalation and devastating consequences.
