Hamas Dismisses Biden's Ceasefire Plan: No New Proposal on the Table

Hamas Dismisses Biden's Ceasefire Plan: No New Proposal on the Table

In a candid assessment, a senior Hamas official has cast doubt on the existence of a substantive ceasefire proposal aimed at resolving the long-standing conflict with Israel over the Gaza Strip and securing the release of captives. This statement comes in the wake of President Joe Biden's recent outline of a purported Israeli plan for a phased agreement.

Ossama Hamdane, a high-ranking member of the Palestinian Islamic movement based in Beirut and reached by phone from the Gaza Strip, categorically stated, "The truth is, there is no new proposal presented to Hamas." His remarks directly contradict Biden's assertion on May 31 that he had outlined the broad contours of an Israeli-proposed roadmap for a comprehensive ceasefire between the Israeli military and Hamas in Gaza, including the gradual release of captives held in the coastal enclave.

"There is no proposal; it's just words spoken by Biden in a speech," Hamdane asserted, casting doubt on the substance of the president's remarks. "So far, the Americans have not presented any document that commits them to abiding by what Biden said in his speech," he added, underscoring the absence of a tangible, written agreement.

According to the Hamas official, President Biden's statement was an attempt "to conceal Israel's rejection" of a separate agreement that had been presented earlier in May and initially accepted by the Palestinian movement.

Hamdane reiterated Hamas' willingness to accept an accord, provided it meets the group's demands, which include a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip.

The stark assessment by the senior Hamas figure highlights the persistent impasse in reaching a lasting resolution to the protracted conflict between the Palestinian faction and Israel. While Biden's remarks aimed to convey progress on the diplomatic front, the absence of a concrete proposal agreeable to both parties remains a significant obstacle to achieving a sustainable ceasefire and addressing the issue of captives.

As the situation in Gaza continues to simmer, the credibility of Biden's purported plan has been called into question, casting doubt on the prospects for an imminent breakthrough. The divergent perspectives underscore the deep-rooted complexities and mistrust that have plagued efforts to broker a durable peace in the region.

With tensions simmering and the threat of escalation ever-present, the onus remains on all parties to engage in substantive negotiations and address the core grievances fueling the conflict. Only through a genuine commitment to compromise and the pursuit of mutually acceptable solutions can the long-standing impasse be resolved and the path to lasting stability be paved.
