Guinea’s supreme court confirms general Mamadi Doumbouya’s presidential victory
Guinea’s Supreme Court on Sunday officially confirmed the victory of General Mamadi Doumbouya in the presidential election held on December 28, marking a decisive first-round win for the country’s military leader.
According to the final results announced by the court, Doumbouya, who ran as an independent candidate, secured 86.72 percent of the vote. The ruling validated provisional results released earlier and formally declared him president of the Republic of Guinea for a seven-year term.
The election was intended to conclude the transition process following the 2021 military coup that brought Doumbouya to power after the overthrow of former civilian president Alpha Condé. Despite earlier pledges to hand power back to civilians, Doumbouya chose to run in the election, which took place in a tightly controlled political environment.
Major opposition figures, many of whom remain in exile, were barred from participating in the vote. Several opposition parties called for a boycott, denouncing the election as lacking credibility amid restrictions on political freedoms, bans on demonstrations, and arrests of dissenting voices.
Doumbouya, a 41-year-old former special forces commander, conducted a limited campaign and appeared only briefly at a rally on the final day. In his campaign message, he promised peace and stability for Guinea’s population of approximately 13 million.
International reactions were swift. The United States congratulated Doumbouya on his election and expressed its intention to strengthen bilateral relations and promote stability and economic development. Critics, however, warn that the consolidation of power under military rule raises serious concerns about democracy and human rights in the country.
