Gitex Africa 2026 opens in Marrakech with global tech participation
GITEX Africa Morocco 2026 opened in Marrakech with more than 1,450 exhibitors and startups from over 145 countries, marking the start of the continent’s largest technology and digital economy gathering.
The three-day event runs until April 9 under the theme focused on accelerating Africa’s digital economy through artificial intelligence. It is organized by the Digital Development Agency and KAOUN International under the supervision of Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform.
The opening ceremony brought together senior officials and global stakeholders, including Aziz Akhannouch, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Wamkele Mene, Chakib Alj, and Trixie LohMirmand.
Akhannouch said Morocco has shifted from fragmented digital initiatives to a coordinated national strategy. He noted that investment in the sector increased from MAD 11 million in 2021 to more than MAD 1.7 billion in 2024, reflecting a significant expansion in public policy support.
He also highlighted progress in infrastructure and technology adoption, including plans to extend 5G coverage to 45 percent of the population by 2026, more than 1.4 million fiber-optic subscriptions, and the arrival of a major cloud investment creating over 700 jobs.
Morocco’s positioning as a regional digital hub was also emphasized. Seghrouchni described the country as a connector between Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic, with a focus on combining technological development with digital sovereignty.
This year’s edition represents a significant scale-up. Organizers expect more than 55,000 participants, over 700 speakers, and around 400 investors from more than 40 countries, managing a combined $350 billion in assets.
The event spans a wide range of sectors, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, fintech, agritech, health technology, data centers, smart cities, and mobility. Future mobility is a new focus area, highlighting transport innovation and sustainable infrastructure.
Startups remain central to the event through the North Star Africa platform, which brings together more than 800 companies. Programs include mentorship, training, and direct engagement with investors.
Morocco is also expanding its domestic startup presence through the “Morocco 300” initiative, which increases participation and provides financial and logistical support, including coverage of most exhibition costs and access to international investors.
International participation continues to grow, with new countries joining the event and foreign delegations presenting startup ecosystems and partnership opportunities.
Sustainability and greentech are also prominent themes. Organizers are positioning artificial intelligence as a tool to improve infrastructure, public services, and environmental outcomes across the continent.
The event’s investor matchmaking platform remains a key feature, connecting startups with global capital through curated meetings and funding opportunities.
As GITEX Africa 2026 begins, the central message is clear: Africa is not only a destination for investment but an active contributor to global technological innovation.
