German retailers face growing pressure as rising costs weaken business outlook
Germany’s retail industry is entering a period of increasing uncertainty as companies struggle with rising operating costs and fragile consumer demand. Retailers across the country are reporting weaker business conditions, with higher expenses for energy, labour and procurement reducing profit margins and putting pressure on future growth.
According to a survey conducted among 600 retail companies by the German Retail Association, a significant share of businesses believe the sector’s situation has deteriorated. The study found that 42% of retailers currently describe their economic situation as poor, while almost two-thirds reported that conditions worsened during the first half of the year compared with the same period in 2025.
Rising expenses challenge retailers’ profitability
Retail businesses are facing a combination of cost pressures that have made daily operations increasingly difficult. Higher energy bills, increased wage expenses and more expensive purchasing costs are weighing heavily on companies already dealing with cautious consumer spending.
Many retailers have struggled to fully transfer these additional costs to customers, as households remain sensitive to prices and continue to limit discretionary purchases. This has created a difficult balance between maintaining competitiveness and protecting profit margins.
Calls for government intervention
The German Retail Association has called on the government to introduce measures aimed at easing the burden on businesses. Industry representatives argue that reducing cost pressures and improving economic conditions are essential to preserving jobs and supporting the long-term stability of the retail sector.
Retailers are particularly concerned that prolonged weakness in consumer demand could affect investment decisions, store development and employment across the industry.
Consumer uncertainty weighs on Germany’s economy
The challenges facing retailers reflect broader concerns within the German economy, where companies in several sectors have been affected by high costs and slower demand. As one of Europe’s largest consumer markets, Germany’s retail performance is closely linked to household confidence and overall economic activity.
With businesses expecting continued pressure in the months ahead, retailers are looking for clearer economic signals and stronger support measures to navigate a challenging environment.
The sector’s outlook will largely depend on whether consumer confidence improves and whether policymakers can address the structural cost issues affecting companies across Germany.
