In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has once again exacted a heavy toll on innocent lives. According to hospital officials, at least 29 Palestinians were killed, and dozens more were wounded in a devastating Israeli airstrike that targeted a camp for displaced people adjacent to the al-Awda school in the town of Abasan al-Kabira, east of Khan Younis.

The Gaza Health Ministry, run by Hamas, reported that the strike hit next to the gate of the al-Awda school, a site that had become a refuge for those forced to flee their homes in the eastern villages of Khan Younis amid the escalating violence. The Israeli military, in a statement, claimed to have used "precise munition" to target a "terrorist from Hamas' military wing" who had allegedly participated in the October 7 attack on Israel. However, the military also acknowledged that it was "looking into the reports that civilians were harmed" near the al-Awda school.

The incident unfolded a week after the Israeli military ordered civilians to evacuate Abasan al-Kabira and other areas of eastern Khan Younis, prompting tens of thousands to seek shelter in makeshift camps and designated safe zones. Witnesses painted a harrowing picture of the aftermath, recounting widespread destruction and the tragic loss of innocent lives, including women and children.

Ayman Al-Dahma, 21, offered a chilling firsthand account, stating that the area was teeming with as many as 3,000 displaced people at the time of the strike. "They said it was a safe place – that there were water and food, there were schools and everything... Suddenly, a rocket comes down on you and all the people around you," he lamented, describing the number of casualties as "unimaginable" and recounting the sight of people whose limbs had been severed by the blast.

Mohamed Awadeh Anzeh echoed the sentiment, recalling how the area had been bustling with people and market traders "going about their normal lives" when the strike hit. "Suddenly, while we were sitting, there was a sound. It went dark... I was feeding my little child. I don't know what happened. Suddenly, I took him and started running... and while I was running, I saw blood coming down from my leg," he shared, painting a vivid picture of the "terrifying" scene, with body parts strewn across the street.

Iqram Sallout, another witness, added that there had been no prior warning of an imminent strike in the area, which he described as filled with people forced from their homes by the conflict. "There are many displaced people – you couldn't even walk in the streets, there were many tents and people, including young people," he said, emphasizing the severity of the injuries witnessed, even among young children.

The tragic consequences of the strike were further underscored by a video that emerged, depicting more than a dozen dead and seriously wounded people, including several children, lying on the floor of a local hospital. A source at the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, where the injured from Abasan al-Kabira were taken, expressed fear that the death toll would continue to rise.

This latest attack marks the fourth strike on or near schools sheltering displaced people in the past four days alone. The Israeli military has defended the previous three strikes, claiming that Hamas politicians, police officers, and fighters were using the schools as bases. However, the mounting civilian casualties, particularly among the most vulnerable, have cast a dark shadow over the ongoing conflict, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution that prioritizes the protection of innocent lives.

As the world watches in horror, the unfolding tragedy in Gaza serves as a grim reminder of the devastating toll conflicts take on civilian populations, particularly those already displaced and seeking refuge. The urgency for a peaceful resolution that safeguards the lives of all, regardless of affiliation, has never been more apparent.
