Gambia Strengthens Bonds with Morocco, Commends King's Vision for African Prosperity
In a diplomatic move reflecting the deepening ties between the two countries, Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Mamadou Tangara visited his Moroccan counterpart, bringing a written message from President Adama Barrow to His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This encounter underscores the growing partnership between the West African and North African nations as they navigate the complex geopolitical landscape of the continent.
During their meeting, Tangara praised the strong relationship between Gambia and Morocco, expressing gratitude for Morocco's unwavering support under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This support has been particularly notable in Morocco's role in facilitating the upcoming Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit, scheduled to be held in Gambia on May 4-5.
Tangara emphasized the importance of collaboration, highlighting Gambia's shared aspirations for a prosperous, unified, and stable Africa. He endorsed the Royal Initiative for the Atlantic, a key component of Morocco's vision for regional stability and prosperity.
Additionally, the Gambian minister reaffirmed his country's support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty, including over the Moroccan Sahara, a longstanding issue that has shaped the region's geopolitical dynamics.
This high-level meeting follows Tangara's previous visit to Morocco in late January, during which the two nations issued a joint statement at the conclusion of the 3rd session of the Moroccan-Gambian Joint Cooperation Commission. The statement highlighted the importance of fostering an environment conducive to mutual investment and leveraging the opportunities offered by expanding markets and infrastructure.
The ministers also commended the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, which promises to provide access to Nigerian gas for at least 15 West African countries, including Gambia, enhancing energy security and economic development in the region.
Furthermore, the officials reviewed the progress of bilateral cooperation in various sectors, emphasizing the need to maintain momentum. Key areas such as investment, industry, trade, fisheries, and renewable energy were discussed, with Morocco reiterating its support for Gambia's National Development Plan.
In a display of mutual solidarity, the two countries pledged to support each other's candidacies at international forums, with Gambia supporting Morocco's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2028-2029.
The ministers expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of their joint commission session, marked by the signing of eleven cooperation agreements, further solidifying the partnership between the two nations. As they concluded their discussions, plans were set for the fourth session of the Joint Commission, with details to be determined through diplomatic channels.
As Gambia and Morocco continue to build on their cooperation, their partnership stands as a beacon of hope for a continent seeking unity, stability, and shared prosperity.
